Alligator Safety Tips

Although the chance of encountering an alligator on any of our properties is slim to none, alligators are a growing concern here in Florida. The more you know to protect yourself, your family, guests and pets, the better prepared you will be on your Florida vacation.
The general rule concerning alligators is, don’t bother them and they won’t bother you. If you do see a gator, the best advice to adhere to is to stay away. Don’t swim outside posted swimming areas or in waters that might contain large alligators, and avoid swimming at night.
Do not feed alligators because this causes them to lose their natural fear of humans. You can prevent alligators from coming ashore by not throwing fish scraps into the water or along the shore.
Do not allow dogs or guests to swim in areas occupied by alligators because they may be killed by them. Don’t try to make a pet of an alligator, and never play with baby alligators because the mother is most probably nearby. Never kill, harass or attempt to move an alligator.
The classic adage of running in a zig-zag pattern to escape an alligator really isn’t true. Like the cheetah, alligators are fast runners, but the truth is they rarely will chase a human on dry land, and rarely run long distances. The average human could outrun an alligator’s top speed of 11 mph (18 kph). Chances are that you won’t encounter an alligator while at any of our property rentals, but an ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure.
